PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Joseph C. Cardin has been named the new superintendent of the Rhode Island Training School, a position he held in the early-1980's and resigned.
Confirming the unannounced appointment in response to a Journal inquiry Wednesday, Kevin Aucoin, the deputy director of the Department of Children, Youth & Families said, "Joe Cardin was appointed the superintendent of the Training School in October of 2012.''
Aucoin did not immediately respond to questions about the circumstances.

A Joseph C. Cardin won a long-running "civil rights/job discrimination'' case against DCYF three years ago. The docket sheet on the Superior Court file says he was awarded "actual damages'' in the amount of $225,000, plus $64,609 for attorneys fees and $2,841 for other costs.
