PROVIDENCE, RI -- A fire in Mount Pleasant briefly routed five adults and eight children from their apartments Saturday morning, Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Joseph R. Desmarais reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Desmarais said it began near a window in a vacant first-floor apartment in a triple-decker at 881 Atwells Ave., at the corner of Carleton Street.
The occupants got out safely before firefighters arrived, at about 8:45 a.m., and there were no injuries.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to declare the fire under control, and the damage from flames was confined to the room in which the fire began. There was only an odor of smoke in the upper floors, so the occupants were allowed to return to their apartments, according to Desmarais.
