PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A motorcyclist who was injured fatally Aug. 3 in downtown Providence had just passed a red light at a high rate when he hit a car, police Sgt. Paul Zienowicz said Friday.

Zienowicz said that James Rivera, 33, of 221 Burnside St., who was pronounced dead less than an hour after the 8 p.m. crash, was not wearing a crash helmet. He also had no license and no insurance, and his motorcycle was not registered, Zienowicz said.

He said three witnesses told police that the motorcycle had run a red light at Westminster Street and Service Road 7 alongside Route 95 when it collided with a car driven by Edgar Rodriguez, 31, of 355 Purchase St., New Bedford, who was not hurt.
