PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A powerful wedge of thunderstorms stretching from Long Island to New Hampshire is bearing down on Rhode Island.
A few sprinkles fell in Providence shortly after 3 p.m.
The National Weather Service at 3 p.m. issued a Special Marine Warning for Block Island Sound, Rhode Island Sound and the waters off Martha's Vineyard, Point Judith and Quonset Point, telling small craft to seek safe harbor immediately. The storm line is moving north at 30 knots, and strong gusts and lightning can be expected.
The Weather Service said that areas to be particularly affected include Block Island, Bristol, and Providence and Kent Counties.
