NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- In a rare Friday night meeting, the Town Council approved zoning amendments that will allow a controversial residential/commercial development at Routes 2 and 102 to move forward.

The mixed use project is called The Preserve at Rolling Greens, and is being developed by M.L. Hawk Realty at the Rolling Greens golf course on Ten Rod Road. Plans call for 106 housing units containing 188 bedrooms. Commercial space will range from 24,000 to 40,000 square feet.

Many nearby homeowners have fiercely opposed the project, saying it will add to traffic congestion, further erode the rural character of the area, stress the water supply and siphon development from the rest of the town, notably Post Road.
