PROVIDENCE -- James A. Diossa, the mayor-elect in Central Falls, widened his margin of victory on Wednesday after officials at the state Board of Elections counted 414 mail ballots from the special mayoral election.

The ballots show that Diossa got 338 of the 414 votes cast, increasing his total of number of votes from 1,076 to 1,414, while Joseph P. Moran III, the former police chief gathered another 76 votes. The total number of votes cast for Moran was 726.

On Tuesday night, Diossa, 27, the son of Colombian immigrants, was elected the first Latino mayor of Central Falls, the state's smallest and poorest city with a Hispanic population that tops 60 percent.

He is just the second Latino mayor in state history, behind Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.
