PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence police have seized 121 guns so far this year -- closing in on last year's record of 134 guns taken off the streets.

The police have already seized more guns than in 2010, when the year's total was 110.

The latest was Dec. 4, when detectives grabbed a stolen gun from a man who used it to pistol-whip a teenager and steal his sneakers, Detective Capt. Michael E. Correia said.

Charles Smith, 21, who had the gun, and his brother Wesley A. Smith, 20, were arrested at their residence at 139 Burnett St.

The brothers and Akinyemi Akinsulire, 19, of 135 Pocasset Ave., were charged with robbing Devon McMahon, 18, on Nov. 30.

Akinsulire was arrested Dec. 1 with the stolen Nikes.
