CRANSTON, R.I. -- The Cranston police investigated a report of a gun at Cranston High School East on Monday, after a student reported hearing others talk about a gun.
Col. Marco Palombo Jr. said Monday afternoon that no gun was found. Three 16-year-old students were questioned by police and later released to their parents, the chief said in a statement.
The incident began at 10:40 a.m., when one student overheard two others talking about a gun, the chief stated. The student texted a parent, who contacted school officials -- who contacted police. School Resource Officer Matthew Davis worked with administrators at the school.
The police searched their lockers and backpacks, as well as the classrooms where the students attended classes, and didn't find a firearm, Palombo said in a statement. A police dog trained in firearms detection also didn't find a weapon during a search.
Raymond Votto, chief operating officer at Cranston Public Schools, said the school enacted its emergency protocols, Votto said.
Principal Sean T. Kelly sent a letter to parents informing them of the situation.
