PROVIDENCE, RI -- Twenty people from immigrant advocacy groups held a State House vigil Tuesday to push for driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants.
The demonstrators said Governor Chafee has failed to meet with them as he promised at a Nov. 19 rally. They are seeking a policy change on the driver's license issue.
Chafee spokeswoman Christine Hunsinger said, "That's not accurate." The governor's legal counsel has been in touch with with advocacy group members, she said, "but I don't think it [a meeting] will happen until after the first of the year."
Jhanet Cabrera of Fuerza Laboral said that driver's licenses "would be beneficial" for the safety of all drivers.
Five members of Rhode Islanders for Immigration Law Enforcement stood in quiet protest.
