PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Fifty years after the Birmingham campaign and March on Washington, pivotal events in the nation's fight for civil rights, the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society is seeking local voices to commemorate the events.

Those who participated in the marches and protests of 1963 or know someone who has and have ties to Rhode Island or Massachusetts are asked to call (401) 421-0606 or e-mail riblackheritagesociety@gmail.com.

"It is critical that we use this year to recapture the spirit of one of the most extraordinary periods in American history," Ray Rickman, a senior adviser to the local group, said this week in a news release.
