PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A 10-month-old baby girl died in an early morning fire at a triple-decker on Bowdoin Street.
The fire appears to have started by a space heater in the first-floor bedroom of 88 Bowdoin St. where the baby was sleeping, Providence Police Lt. Dean Isabella.
Firefighters and rescue crews were already on the scene when police arrived at 3:10 a.m. to find the house engulfed in flames Lt. Isabella said. The fire had also spread to an adjacent triple-decker at 92 Bowdoin St., he said.
A firefighter removed the baby from the first-floor bedroom, he said. Four other people in the house at the time escaped.
Twelve people living 92 Bowdoin St. were also displaced by the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, though "at this time it does not appear to be suspicious," Lt. Isabella said.
