PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Eva-Marie Mancuso, a lawyer and member of the soon-to-be-abolished Board of Governors for Higher Education, is Governor Chafee's new pick to serve as chairwoman of a new, merged education board.

The noon announcement Saturday came just hours after George D. Caruolo, a veteran politician and Chafee's first choice to chair the merged board, removed his name from consideration, citing time constraints of his obligations to his law practice and spending time with his family.

Mancuso is managing partner with Hamel, Waxler, Allen & Collins. She previously served as an assistant attorney general for Rhode Island and assistant district attorney for Bristol County, Mass.

Mancuso's appointment is subject to approval by the state Senate when it reconvenes in January.
