WEST WARWICK, R.I. -- A two-alarm fire at the Echo Valley Apartments on Maple Avenue forced dozens of people from their apartments early Sunday morning.
Some fled in their night clothes when the fire swept through Unit H of the multi-unit complex just before 8 a.m.
There were no reports of serious injuries, but the fire heavily damaged Unit H, leaving a gaping hole in the roof. Two nearby units were evacuated as a precaution.
A fire department spokesman said the first call came in at 7:55 a.m. A few fire trucks remained on the scene by noon. Officials from the state fire marshal's office are joining the West Warwick Fire Department in searching for the cause.
Evacuated residents gathered in a community center at the complex and met with Red Cross officials who offered help in finding temporary lodging.
