Most New Year's Day dips in R.I. will raise money for charities

Calling all polar bears and penguins. You have a chance to bring in the New Year with some ice-cool dips for charity on New Year's Day.

Bristol The Second Annual Winter Wish Swim for Children's Wishes will be at Colt State Park, Bristol, at 11 a.m. Registration is $20 and includes a commemorative mug for the first 100 participants. Proceeds will help grant the wishes of local children suffering life-threatening illnesses.

Jamestown, Narragansett The 37th Annual Jamestown Penguin Plunge for Special Olympics will be at Roger Wheeler State Beach, Narragansett, at noon. (401) 349-4900.

Newport The Newport Polar Bears and anyone "crazy enough to join them" will go for a swim from the Atlantic Beach Club beach at the east end of Easton's Beach to benefit A Wish Come True. After-party is at the Atlantic Beach Club, Memorial Boulevard. (401) 846-0028.

Portsmouth The town's 375th anniversary year will kick off with a noon plunge into the Sakonnet River from Portsmouth Island Park Beach. Participants and their supporters will gather at 11:30 a.m for what is being called the 375 Polar Dive.

South Kingstown Tara Joyce's Family Pub is holding its 14th annual Dip for Multiple Sclerosis at noon at 907 Matunuck Beach Rd., Matunuck.

Warwick The Annual New Year's Day plunge will be at noon from the Oakland Beach seawall into Greenwich Bay to benefit the Oakland Beach Carousel Foundation, a volunteer group hand-carving a carousel for Warwick. The event is free but donations are appreciated. DJ Trey, Rocket Street Foods, Mijos Tacos and The Flour Girls will attend.

Warwick Members of the Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club will be City Park at 10 a.m. Tuesday for the second annual Pit Bull Plunge. The money will help the group work with shelters to get the dogs adopted and run educational programs to dispel myths about the breed.

Westerly Registration for the 7th annual Westerly Penguin Plunge at Misquamicut Beach is at St. Clare's Church, 62 Crandall Ave., Westerly, at 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. A police escort will lead the penguin caravan the 2.8 miles to the beach in Watch Hill. The plunge is at noon. Participants will have access to the beach next to the carousel in Watch Hill. Costumes, water shoes recommended.
