PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- U.S. Sen. Jack Reed is traveling to Afghanistan and Pakistan to "get a first-hand look at security and political developments in the region" and to assess their impact on "America's national security," his office said Friday.
Reed, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, is making the trip with U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat who is chairman of the Armed Services Committee. It his Reed's fourteenth trip to Afghanistan, his seventh to Pakistan.
The two will be meeting with "high-ranking foreign leaders and diplomats" as well as American military commanders, civilians and service members from Rhode Island and Michigan, Reed's office said.
They are scheduled to return next week.
