NEWPORT, R.I. -- A motel resident died and a firefighter was injured during a Sunday morning fire at the Pineapple Inn at 372 Coddington Highway.
Police said the fire happened shortly after midnight. Police have not yet determined how it started, but Newport Police Sgt. Rita Barker said the fire "is not suspicious."
The police would not release the name of the person who died pending notification of next of kin, although Barker said the motel resident had been there for at least a year.
One firefighter was injured while battling the flames and was treated at Newport Hospital. Firefighters arrived at the hotel at 12:13 a.m. and left the area about five hours later.

VICTIM MAN IN HIS 50S: Fire Marshal Wayne Clark on Sunday afternoon said the victim was a man in his 50s, though officials still are not releasing his name. Clark also identified smoke inhalation as the cause of the firefighter's injuries, and said the fire had done damage estimated at $150,000 to the motel.

QUESTIONS LINGER ON IDENTIFICATION: Newport police said Sunday afternoon they have not made any attempt to notify the relatives of the victim because there has not been a definitive identification of the body. Police said they are waiting for more information and the state medical examiner's office is expected to have a positive identification Monday.
