PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- About 20 people turned out Thursday morning on Capitol Hill to voice complaints about new state sales taxes that are going into effect Oct. 1.
Rhode Island legislators earlier this year approved applying the state's 7 percent sales tax to a number of previously exempt services -- such as pet grooming and limousine rides.
"I think it's going to put me out of business," said Maria Toro, who runs a Warwick pet-sitting business.
Toro was among those who spoke at a hearing before officials from the state Division of Taxation, which is charged with spelling out how businesses comply with the new taxes. Tax officials will review the public comments before finalizing the rules, or possibly, deciding to leave portions of the law unchanged.
