PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence Journal has established a charitable fund at the Rhode Island Foundation, the nonprofit organization announced Monday.
The $14-million permanent endowment, set up as a corporate-donor-advised fund, is the largest such fund held at the Rhode Island Foundation, said Deborah Baum, a spokeswoman for the Foundation.
Established in 1956 by then Publisher John C. A. Watkins, The Providence Journal Charitable Foundation awards annual grants to arts, environmental, social-service and education programs throughout Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.
The Providence Journal, founded in 1829, is the country's oldest newspaper in continuous daily publication.
"At The Providence Journal, we consider ourselves part of the fabric of the community," said Howard G. Sutton, the newspaper's publisher and chief executive. "We plan for The Journal to be around for a long time ... And with this new fund at the Rhode Island Foundation, our philanthropic giving to Rhode Islanders will continue forever."
