PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The sentencing date for Cranston estate planner Joseph Caramadre and his employee has been pushed back to March 29.
Caramadre alerted U.S. District Judge William Smith Friday that he had switched lawyers and hoped to withdraw his guilty plea to charges he defrauded terminally ill people in a multimillion dollar investment scheme.
Caramadre and Raymour Radhakrishnan pleaded guilty in November to wire and mail fraud and conspiracy in an investment scheme that used dying people's identities to buy insurance policies and brokerage accounts that investors profited from after the people died. Their pleas came after four days of testimony in what was expected to be a four-month trial.
Smith agreed to delay the sentencing to give Caramadre time to file a formal motion to withdraw his guilty plea.
