NEWPORT, R.I. -- A Connecticut inmate serving time in Rhode Island added three years to his prison term for possessing a 7-inch shank he crafted from metal pulled from his cell door.
Superior Court Judge Edward Clifton ordered Shawn Robinson, described by prison guards as one of the worst inmates, to begin the sentence after he completes the 55 years he is already serving for crimes in Connecticut.
A jury in July found Robinson guilty of possessing a prohibited weapon after a trial in which he represented himself.
Guards testified they discovered a pen and metal shank hidden in his underwear waistband during a search March 9, 2009.
Robinson argued guards had set him up in retaliation for his filing a lawsuit against the state Department of Corrections.
