LINCOLN, R.I. -- A 91-year-old woman died in a fire at her home Tuesday morning, according to her granddaughter.
Jeannette Barry was upstairs sleeping on the second floor early Tuesday when her husband, Henry, 90, who was working on the computer in his basement, smelled smoke and went up to the first floor, according to granddaughter Laura Reynolds of Cranston.
Henry Barry tried to extinguish a blaze with a fire extinguisher and water, according to his granddaughter. Henry Barry was worried about his wife and tried getting upstairs but, heavy smoke stopped him.
"All of a sudden the place was full of smoke," he said.
Henry Barry said he and his wife met when they were 18 years old and were married in 1945 after he was in the service. They built the house in 1948 and have lived there ever since.
Henry and Jeannette Barry raised a family in the home on Boulevard Avenue and now have 7 grandchildren and 6 grandchildren.
The couple "lived a very good life," Henry Barry said. "I never dreamed it would happen like this."
