CRANSTON, R.I. -- Increases in salaries, pensions and health insurance costs are expected to drive up the cost of running the city's schools by about $6.2 million in the fiscal year that begins July 1, according to Superintendent Judith Lundsten.
The $140.2 million budget that Supt. Lundsten has requested for fiscal 2014 represents a 4.6 percent increase over the current year's budget of $133.9 million, according to the superintendent's presentation to the School Committee Tuesday night.
The spending plan includes 2 percent pay raises for teachers, admistrators and support staff.
The city's requested contribution of $94.2 million is about 3.6 percent more than the district received for fiscal 2013.
The School Committee is scheduled to hold its first public hearing on the budget on Jan. 28th.
