CRANSTON, R.I. -- Firefighters were looking for hotspots shortly before midnight Friday after battling a fire in a three-story building at the corner of Park and Elmwood avenues that had sent flames shooting through the roof.
Earlier, they used ladder trucks to get above the building, which has stores on the ground level and apartments on the second and third floors, and hose it down.
Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Morris said one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. No other injuries were reported.
A resident said the fire, reported at 9:22 p.m., started in a third-floor apartment next to her. Morris said it spread around the third floor. He said the fire's cause is under investigation.
The building, on the northeast corner of the intersection, is across from St. Matthew Church and a Mobil gas station.
