PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - Superior Court Judge Sarah Taft-Carter set a timeline Friday for the final necessary approval of the pension changes Providence retirees and current firefighters and police officers have already agreed to.
The agreement will shore up the city's underfunded retirement system.
The process includes a March 1 date for people to notify the court if they wish to object to the agreement and a March 5 date to testify against the deal. It also includes an April 1 deadline for any retiree who wants to opt out of the deal.
Taft-Carter stayed to the schedule despite a handful of men who asked that the March 5 date be pushed back ten days so those who live out of state or have extenuating circumstances could have a chance to get to Rhode Island. Taft-Carter said members have had ample time.
