Driver charged with driving drunk after hitting state police cruiser

Cranston, R.I. -- A 19-year-old Glocester woman was charged with driving under the influence after she hit a state police cruiser that was stopped on the shoulder of Route 37 early Saturday morning. No one was injured in the collision.

Shannon Hawkins, of 66 Cooper Rd., Glocester was driving west on Route 37 at about 1:30 a.m. when her 2007 Chrysler Sebring struck the police cruiser, which was stopped near Exit 1B, according to the state police. At the time, the cruiser had its emergency lights flashing while the trooper that was driving it was assisting with the investigation of an earlier crash.

Hawkins was stopped by troopers near the site of the crash and charged with driving under the influence, first offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test and possession of marijuana.
