PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence Student Union, a group of activist high school students, are holding a press conference at the State House Wednesday to protest to the use of "high-stakes" testing as part of the new graduation requirements.
Tomorrow, students will deliver letters to Governor Chafee explaining why they are opposed to using the New England Common Assessment Program or NECAP as a criterion for earning a diploma.
Starting with this year's juniors, students must earn partial proficiency on the NECAP in math and English. Students will be given alternatives if they flunk the test, however, including the opportunity to retake the test again and show progress.
