PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Two Providence residents have been indicted separately for allegedly embezzling federal income-tax checks, it was announced on Thursday by United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha and the IRS in Boston.
Elvy Gomez, 39, is charged with one count each of theft of government property, aggravated identity theft, fraudulent endorsement of U.S.Treasury checks, and money laundering, Neronha said. The indictment alleges that Gomez embezzled government tax checks totaling in excess of $1,000 using another person's identification. It is also alleged that Gomez used the bank account to wire $17,000 to the Dominican Republic.
In an unrelated case, Leticia Gonzalez, 39, was charged with theft of government property. It is alleged that Gonzalez embezzled government tax checks totaling in excess of $1,000.
