HOPKINTON, R.I. -- A Westerly couple face charges in connection with attempts to break into two houses Thursday, Hopkinton Police Chief David S. Palmer said Friday in a news release.

Michael Gaccione, 36, and Rose Roberts, 37, of 37 Canal St., were arrested after a Hopkinton patrolman noticed a strange car backed into a driveway on Woodville Alton Road and watched Gaccione knock on the door, peer inside and try the knob.

Meanwhile, a woman on nearby Forest Glen Drive called the police after surprising an intruder who knocked on her door, ripped a screen window and was trying to get in through a slider. The descriptions matched.

Both were charged with attempted breaking and entering and conspiracy. Gaccione was also charged with threatening public officials.
