PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- An East Providence lawyer who specializes in drunk-driving cases allegedly obtained a Massachusetts driver's license after her R.I. license was suspended because she had been charged with driving under the influence after a crash.
Layne Savage lied on her Massachusetts application about her license not being revoked or suspended in another state, Amy Kempe, spokeswoman for the R.I. Attorney General's Office said. Kempe said Savage got the Bay State license on Jan. 24, the day hers was suspended in Rhode Island.
Savage turned herself in Friday, shortly after an arrest warrant charging her with a bail violation was issued by District Court Judge William C. Clifton at the attorney general's request.
The judge set new conditions for her release on bail: She must not operate a motor vehicle anywhere; the court will monitor her participation in substance abuse counseling; she will be allowed to travel to Florida for substance abuse treatment, and she must surrender the Massachusetts driver's license.
