PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Central Falls Police Department, in a Jan. 28 news release, announced a $30,000 animal control grant intended to help low-income pet owners keep the cat population down through spaying and neutering.
"Statistics show one male cat can father 420,000 kittens in just five years," the release said.
PolitiFact Rhode Island, which normally examines claims from politicians on weighty issues such as gun control and tax policy, couldn't resist putting this claim to the Truth-O-Meter, in part because variants have been floating around the Internet for years.
