PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A man and a 5-year-old child remain in critical condition with "very severe burns" after a house fire Sunday night, Acting Fire Chief Michael J. Dillon said.

The authorities said Christopher Etienne, 5, was playing with matches in his bedroom when he accidentally set fire to his mattress and clothes. Christopher remains at Hasbro Children's Hospital with second- and third-degree burns over 85 percent of his body, Dillon said.

Christopher Husband, 43, remains at Rhode Island Hospital with second- and third-degree burns over 30 percent of his body, Dillon said.

A woman and an infant girl were also taken to the hospital as a precaution, Dillon said.

Firefighters were called at about 9:30 Sunday night to 175 Virginia Ave., Deputy Assistant Chief James Mirza said.

The fire was contained to the second-floor bedroom in the duplex, Mirza and Dillon said. The family in the adjacent unit, Dillon said, was evacuated as a precaution. That unit was not affected.

An earlier version of this story was published at 11:32 a.m.
