PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A 24-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges related to crashing a Bristol Fire Department special hazards vehicle that he took for a joy ride while intoxicated on July 16, 2011, officials at the Rhode Island Attorney General's office said in a news release Tuesday.

Clayton Hardon, 24, pleaded guilty to a felony of driving a vehicle without the owner's consent and misdemeanors of reckless driving, leaving the scene and driving while intoxicated, first offense.

Superior Court Justice Netti C. Vogel sentenced Hardon to three years suspended followed by five years deferred; 500 hours of community service; and $110,000 restitution. He must get alcohol counseling and write an apology. He already served his license suspension for breath test refusal.
