PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Ex-Central Falls Mayor Charles D. Moreau, who is scheduled to be sentenced to federal prison on a corruption charge Tuesday, is seeking a penalty of 21 months behind bars.
Moreau, through his lawyer, William J. Murphy, has filed a memorandum in U.S. District Court that says the former chief executive of the state's poorest city "recognizes and appreciates the wrongfulness of his actions.'' But, he wrote, that the emergency board-up contract given to Michael G. Bouthillette, his friend and political supporter, did not cause the city to "suffer any economic loss.''
Moreau is accused of accepting gratuities -- a new furnace and home repairs to his properties in Central Falls and Lincoln -- in exchange for the contract that paid Bouthilette more than $1 million.
Moreau will be sentenced at 10 a.m.; Bouthillette will follow at 11 a.m.
