PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said that by morning, there were no roads on the state highway system that were impassable and that it was widening lanes and ramps.
"We're doing OK," said Joseph Baker, head of highway and bridge maintenance. The DOT had close to 200 state and private plows and other equipment working Monday, down from as many as 500 during the storm.
Unlike the blizzard of 1978, when long lines of cars were buried on the interstate highways, Baker said there were only a few instances this time. He credited the travel ban ordered by Governor Chafee with letting his equipment get around freely.
