PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- U.S. Rep. James Langevin says he applauds President Obama's proposals for changing gun laws in his State of the Union address along with the president's approach to boosting the economy.
Minutes after the address ended, the Rhode Island Democrat said President Obama laid out "the right path" to creating jobs and growing our economy by supporting a strong middle class.
But Langevin said he was especially proud that more than 30 members of Congress gave guest tickets to people affected by gun violence. Those guests in the gallery sent a powerful message that the status quo is unacceptable, Langevin said.
"I praise the President for standing firmly behind universal background checks and getting assault weapons and high capacity magazines off our streets."
