PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A contingent of local environmental activists will participate in the "Forward Climate" rally outside the White House over the weekend.

The rally, which organizers are billing as the largest climate rally in American history, coincides with the President's Day holiday, formally observed Monday.

"The climate crisis is real and urgent here in Rhode Island," Abel Collins, program manager of Sierra Club Rhode Island, said in a news release. "We need President Obama to act now by stopping the Keystone XL Pipeline and preventing the 120 parts-per-million of atmospheric carbon dioxide it represents. It's recklessly irresponsible to be adding that much carbon to the skies."

The Rhode Island contingent includes members of the Sierra Club Rhode Island, Brown University, Salve Regina University, the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Interfaith Power and Light, 350.org, and Occupy Providence.
