CRANSTON, R.I. -- The convicted bank robber sought in a week-long bank robbery spree in two cities was caught Thursday night after the fifth bank robbery-- just a short distance from the Cranston police station.
Cranston Detective Capt. Sean Carmody said Friday that Vaughn Watrous, 35 was arrested shortly after robbing a Citizens Bank branch inside the Stop & Shop supermarket on Garfield Avenue. Watrous is expected to be arraigned in District Court, Warwick, Friday afternoon.
Watrous is accused of also robbing a Sovereign Bank in Cranston on Wednesday, two Sovereign Banks in Providence on Monday and Tuesday, and another Citizens Bank in Providence last week.
Watrous simply gives the tellers hold-up notes, scribbled on the back of deposit envelopes, according to the police.
Watrous, who was convicted of robbing banks a decade ago, has problems with drugs and alcohol, according to Providence police.
