PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A local woman was charged with drunken driving after police accused her of speeding backward into a marked Providence police SUV.
Sgt. Richard Fernandes was in the supervisor's Chevrolet Trailblazer, waiting behind Amanda Evora, 27, of 202 Bellevue Ave., as she dropped off a woman on Whitford Avenue Thursday night, according to a police report. As the woman walked away, Evora suddenly reveresed "at a high rate of speed" and slammed into the front of the cruiser, the report said.
Patrolman Michael Troia noted that Evora smelled of alcohol, had blood-shot eyes, swayed during a field sobriety test, and told him she'd been drinking merlot.
Evora refused a breath test. Evora was charged with drunken driving, driving with a suspended license, refusing a chemical test, and other summonses.
