CRANSTON, R.I. _ The School Committee has struck down a proposal by the superintendent to grant 2 percent pay raises to teachers, administrators, bus drivers and support staff for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
Last Thursday's 5-to-1 vote is expected to save the school department $1.89 million, Committee Chairwoman Andrea Iannazzi said.
Meanwhile, the committee voted unanimously to restore $482,000 in salaries that the Supt. Judith A. Lundsten had cut in her proposed budget for the middle-schools. The superintendent wanted to restructure team-teaching to reduce staff. Committee members said the plan would increase class sizes.
The committee is expected to adopt a budget request to send to the City Council when when it meets Feb. 26 at Western Hills Middle School.
