PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Glocester woman has been arrested and accused of hitting two people as they crossed the street, fleeing the scene, the State Police said.

Authorities said Amanda Ashman, 23, of 37 Pound Rd. was under the influence of alcohol when she hit Gene Hemingway, 49, of 21 Division St., Apt. 4, and Patricia Daniels, 44, of 2 Pearl St., both of East Greenwich, around midnight on Main Street in East Greenwich. Hemingway and Daniels were crossing the street when they were struck, Capt. Frank B. Castellone said.

Hemingway remains at Rhode Island Hospital in serious condition. No information was available for Daniels. Her injuries were less severe than Hemingway's, Castellone said.

A motorist called 911 and followed Ashman onto Route 95 north. The State Police arrested her on Route 44 west in Smithfield.

She is scheduled to appear in District Court Wednesday on a number of charges including driving under the influence of alchohol or drugs, serious injuries resulting; leaving the scene of an accident; and possession of marijuana.
