SCITUATE, R.I. -- A state trooper who halted a vehicle for speeding on Route 95 northbound in West Greenwich Tuesday found that its two occupants had between them 31 credit cards in various names, it was announced on Wednesday by Col. Steven G. O'Donnell, superintendent of state police.

O'Donnell said some of the cards were in the driver's name. All proved fraudulent, he said in a news release, and all were encoded with information from stolen cards. He said the U.S. Secret Service assisted with the investigation.

The driver, Emendjer Mathurin, 22, of Queens Village, N.Y., and a passenger, Abdul Springer, 37, of Jamaica, N.Y., were charged with obtaining credit cards through fraudulent means. They were held pending a court appearance.
