Thomas N. Shellman, suspect in Bank Newport robbery
NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- With the help of East Greenwich officers, police on Wednesday arrested Thomas N. Shellman of 30 Lang Drive in North Kingstown, charging him with first-degree robbery and receiving stolen goods, the detective commander said Thursday.
Lt. Christopher Emerson said bills were found on Shellman that were traced back to Wednesday's robbery of Bank Newport at 1350 Ten Rod Rd., (Route 102) in North Kingstown. During a court-authorized search of Shellman's residence, Emerson said, detectives seized a dark overcoat, grey knit hat, cash from the robbery and the note used to rob Bank Newport.
Shellman appeared in District Court, Warwick, and was ordered held without bail. He has a status conference Feb. 28 and a felony screening March 26. The charge of first-degree robbery was a result of the teller being older than 60.
