PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Fire Department is getting a $421,064 federal grant to help buy new equipment, Mayor Taveras and all four members of the state's congressional delegation announced Friday.
U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Representatives Jim Langevin and David Cicilline wrote letters to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security supporting the city's application, according to the news release announcing the grant.
The money will be used to buy protective hoods and LED lights that can penetrate smoke, as well as to upgrade the department's outdated fire nozzles and smoke mitigation equipment.
