PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- More than 70 percent of Rhode Island's young, growing Latino population rent their homes, and nearly one in three of these households spend more than half of their monthly income on rent, according to the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University and HousingWorks Rhode Island.
The two groups released an infographic Wednesday that displays the challenges that Latinos face in Rhode Island's high-cost housing market.
Home ownership is out of reach for many Latinos in Rhode Island, whose median household income is $29,146, far below the state median of $53,636. An income of $61,925 is needed to afford the median-priced single-family home in Rhode Island. ("Afford" in this context means spending no more than 30 percent of household income on housing.)
