PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Kilts are coming. So are men who never thought they'd wear them a few years ago: members of the Providence Police Pipes and Drums.
The 15-member band -- 9 bagpipers and 6 drummers -- will be marching and performing in the St. Patrick's Day parade in Pawtucket on Saturday, in the Providence parade the following weekend and the one in Newport after that.
Most of the band's members never played music, much less bagpipes, until a few years ago, when then Capt. Timothy Lee decided to take lessons, and other members on the force followed.
The members in the band say while they enjoy making music and performing in parades, the band's primary purpose is to honor colleagues in funerals and memorials.
