EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Kim Mercer has been officially nominated to be the next superintendent of schools, announced Heather Martino, a municipal advisor with the state's Department of Revenue, on Thursday afternoon.
Mercer, who's the deputy superintendent of schools in Pawtucket, was chosen from two dozen candidates by a five-member selection committee, of which Martino is a member.
Next Tuesday, the search committee's recommendation will go before the School Committee, which is expected to support Mercer's nomination. Last week the School Committee conducted a public forum for superintendent finalists and only invited one: Mercer.
Next Thursday, the nomination will then go to the state-appointed Budget Commission, which makes all financial decisions in the city. Mercer's confirmation is expected.
