PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Veteran Democratic campaign consultant Robert Horowitz was headed over to the Smithfield Police Department on Friday, to turn himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with an alleged campaign violation.
The warrant was the result of a complaint filed with the Smithfield police by James Archer, according to Smithfield Detective Commander Michael Rheaume. Archer was a 2012 Republican candidate for the General Assembly.
Horowitz is charged with a misdemeanor violation of a law that says in part: "No person shall intentionally write, print, post, or distribute... a circular, flier, or poster designed or tending to injure or defeat any candidate,'' unless the name of the person or organization disseminating the item is "conspicuously'' displayed.
Lawyer John MacDonald issued this statement on Horowitz' behalf: "Mr. Horowitz maintains his innocence in this matter. All state campaign rules and regulations were fully complied with. Unfortunately, this charge stems from the political sour grapes of those that were defeated in November.''
