PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Representatives of the U.S. Attorney's office and the Rhode Island Attorney General's office met in December in Governor Chafee's office regarding an inquiry into waste and fraud in state human service programs.

But neither office has received a report on the probe prepared by former gubernatorial candidate Ken Block's software firm, officials said.

Jim Martin, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha, confirmed the December meeting but declined comment on what transpired.

Amy Kempe, spokeswoman for R.I. Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, said Block gave Kilmartin's office a "courtesy" briefing last year as he was starting his investigation, but did not share his findings.

On Friday, Governor Chafee said on WJAR's "10 News Conference" program that Block's firm discovered waste and fraud in the state's Medicaid and food stamp programs.

Chafee said his administration was investigating the findings but would not make the report public. He stood by that decision Monday, despite growing calls to release the report.

Kempe said Kilmartin would not request a copy.

"The attorney general has faith that, if criminal acts were uncovered, the governor would forward a copy to the appropriate agencies," Kempe said.

R.I. State Police Supt. Steven G. O'Donnell had no comment, deferring questions to Chafee's staff.
