PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Robert Kando remains executive director of the state Board of Elections, board chairman Frank Rego confirmed following a closed-door meeting with board members that last one hour.
Kando faced strong criticism after introducing a legislative package into the state General Assembly on the board's behalf without giving members -- or their legal counsel -- a chance to review it.
Rego said the board, which sealed the minutes of the meeting, took no votes in the executive session.
He said the board had a frank discussion in which members "reiterated the chain of command" to Kando. He likened it to a family "clearing the air."
Prior to the meeting, the board discussed and voted to make significant changes to its legislative package, including striking out controversial provisions dealing with mail ballot recounts and campaign finance requirements.
