WARWICK, R.I. -- Nearly 200 parents, teachers and students from Gorton Junior High School showed up at the School Committee meeting Tuesday night to let officials know they want their school to stay open.
They weren't on the agenda and had to wait until the end of the meeting to speak, but they said they wanted to be heard.
They questioned the educational soundness of closing the school and they criticized what they called a rushed process that lead a study committee to recommend that Gorton be closed and its students split between Aldrich and Winman junior high schools.
The School Committee has not officially received the recommendation yet, but board members said there will be ample public hearings before a final decision is made.
